The Birth Story of Tokubetsu Junmai Kita no Nishiki Maruta
Tokubetsu Junmai Kita no Nishiki Maruta is a pinnacle of junmai sake made from rice grown in Hokkaido, Japan, and bears the Kobayashi family’s trade name “Maruta.” This sake maximizes the robust umami of rice nurtured in the northern lands, preserving the natural color and rich flavor of the sake. Through meticulous brewing methods, it achieves a solid quality that stands up to various dishes, boasting excellent compatibility with a wide range of cuisines. This renowned sake, which adorns the northern lands, is truly an art piece of Japanese sake.
The Harmony of Flavor and Aroma
The greatest allure of Maruta lies in its rich and robust taste. The umami of the rice is distinctly felt, with a perfect balance of umami and acidity. While the aroma is subtle, a rich flavor unfolds in the mouth, offering new discoveries with each sip. Whether chilled or warmed, its taste remains consistent, allowing enjoyment at any temperature. Maruta embodies the profound depth of Japanese sake in every glass.
Recommended Ways to Enjoy
Tokubetsu Junmai Kita no Nishiki Maruta is a versatile sake that pairs beautifully with food. When chilled, it complements sashimi and salads, enhancing their refreshing flavors. As the temperature rises, it pairs well with grilled fish, yakitori, and when warmed, it enhances the umami of dishes like oden and simmered foods. It not only pairs well with Japanese cuisine but also with Western dishes like caprese, pizza, pasta, and ajillo. It matches exceptionally well with dishes that are challenging to pair with wine, such as herb-grilled mackerel and smoked foods. Maruta enriches the dining experience with its presence.

A meticulously crafted masterpiece that adorns the northern land with its splendor!
In Kuriyama Town, Hokkaido, resides the renowned manager Hideki Kuriyama, who once led Japan's national baseball team, Samurai Japan, in the World Baseball Classic (WBC). The only sake brewery in Kuriyama is Kobayashi Shuzo, and among their original brand "Kita no Nishiki," the "Maruta" is particularly popular. The rice used, "Ginpu," is one of the most historically significant sake brewing rice varieties from Hokkaido, known for its rich umami flavor. "Maruta" is a Tokubetsu Junmai sake that emphasizes the qualities of Ginpu, bringing out the full umami of the rice. It has a smooth texture and a distinct rice sweetness, reminiscent of eating mochi, with an overwhelming presence that fills the heart. It pairs well with sashimi when chilled, but we recommend enjoying it warm with grilled chicken or other meat dishes. This is a high-quality sake that offers a satisfying experience.
